British Prime Minister Winston Churchill has promised the United States that the Allies will invade Sicily by July of that year in order to push northward into Europe. However, Sicily is considered an obvious target and may be defended by the Wehrmacht. Admiral Godfrey informs the Twenty Committee that Britain must trick Nazi Germany into believing the Allies will invade Greece. Charles Cholmondeley proposes an operation from the Trout Memo, which would entail a corpse carrying false secrets and washing ashore. Despite Godfrey's doubts, he gives Montagu and Cholmondeley permission to plan the operation with Lieutenant Commander Ian Fleming.
Operation Mincemeat is a 2022 British war drama film, based on the book by Ben Macintyre about the British deception operation during the Second World War. The film is written by Michelle Ashford, directed by John Madden, distributed by Warner Bros., stars Colin Firth, Kelly Macdonald, Matthew Macfadyen, Penelope Wilton, Johnny Flynn, Jason Isaacs, Lorne MacFadyen, Tom Wilkinson, Hattie Morahan, Simon Russell Beale, Paul Ritter, Mark Gatiss, and Alexander Beyer.
The project was initially announced at Cannes 2019, with Colin Firth (Pride and Prejudice) starring as the real-life Ewen Montagu, who led the operation and wrote the book the film is based on, The Man Who Never Was. (The book was previously adapted into the BAFTA-winning film of the same name.) The new version is directed by The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel's John Madden. Production began in December 2019 but wound up on hold during the pandemic. Filming was completed in the spring of 2021, with Warner Bros. (who has international distribution rights) hoping to release in time for the 2022 awards season. The push down to an April/May release now suggests it could be a dark horse for next year. 59ce067264
